the waterlily
of her countenance belies
her wildfire
Author: Lauren Mirs
down a country road
immense flocks of startled birds
rise like a dust storm
dry grasses dangle
like fingers playing ragtime
composed by the wind
the fate of each star
intricately intertwined
the constellations
summer’s symphony
a monarch sails through June
like a melody
a bullfrog exhales
a dusty accordion
serenades the pond
studying the waves
as if he’s asking questions
the sea can’t answer
butterflies zig zag
like embroidery stitches
through spring’s tapestry
blurry lily pads
develop like Polaroids
near the pond’s surface
the cool whisper
of the story of the wind
its pages turning
